What better way to kick off 2025 than by exploring some of the most exciting video games set to release this year? With highly anticipated titles, beloved franchise installments, rumored release windows, and confirmed dates, the gaming calendar promises something for everyone in 2025.
Here’s a look at the video games our team at Athena Productions is most excited to dive into and play!
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Kingdom Come: Deliverance from Warhorse Studios began as a Kickstarter project in 2014, raising over $1.1 million from backers. Upon release, it received widespread acclaim for its attention to detail, compelling storytelling, and historical accuracy.
In April 2024, Warhorse Studios announced Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, set in 15th-century Bohemia and continuing the story from the original. The sequel boasts a map twice the size of the first game, improved combat mechanics, and more open-ended quests.
Since the announcement, the game has achieved one million wishlists on Steam and was awarded Best PC Game at Gamescom 2024.
Originally scheduled for release on February 11, Warhorse Studios decided to move the launch up to February 4, likely to avoid competing with other major releases in an already crowded month. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Split Fiction
Hazelight Studios, known for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, A Way Out, and It Takes Two, returns with their latest co-op game: Split Fiction.
It's no surprise that Hazelight is creating another co-op experience - and we certainly aren’t complaining! The studio has a remarkable talent for crafting fun, story-driven co-op adventures that keep players on the edge of their seats while delivering plenty of laughs and moments to marvel at the stunning graphics.
Revealed during The Game Awards 2024, the gameplay trailer introduces two writers who, through a bizarre accident, find themselves transported into each other’s fictional worlds.
As players switch between the two vastly different settings - sci-fi and fantasy - the gameplay and environments transform dramatically. Expect to ride dragons, wield laser swords, and explore a host of imaginative mechanics that promise an exciting blend of story and gameplay.
Split Fiction will be available to play on March 6 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC.
Assassin's Creed Shadows
The next entry in Ubisoft’s beloved Assassin’s Creed franchise is Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, set in feudal Japan during the Sengoku period.
The story follows Shinobi Naoe and the legendary Samurai Yasuke, who form an unlikely alliance. Players can switch between the two perspectives, opting for Naoe’s stealthy approach or Yasuke’s combat-heavy style.
Originally planned for a late 2024 release, the game was delayed to February 14 2025, but in early January was delayed again to allow developers more time for optimization and polish. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is now set to launch on March 20.
The game will be available on multiple platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
Atomfall
Atomfall is a survival-action game from UK-based developer Rebellion, the studio behind Sniper Elite and Zombie Army. Set in an alternate 1960s, the game takes place five years after the real-world nuclear disaster at Windscale - the worst nuclear disaster in the United Kingdom’s history.
Players take on the role of an unknown, amnesiac protagonist navigating a radioactive quarantine zone in Northern England. As they explore, they’ll unravel mysteries while battling cultists, robots, mutants, and rogue military agents, all while trying to survive the harsh and dangerous environment.
Atomfall is set to launch on March 27, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Crimson Desert
From Pearl Abyss, the creators of Black Desert Online comes Crimson Desert. Originally developed as a prequel to Black Desert Online, the game has since evolved into a standalone title.
The story follows Kliff, leader of the mercenary group known as the Greymanes, as he fights to survive and lead his band on the harsh and unforgiving continent of Pywel.
The gameplay features open-world exploration, engaging stylized combat, and a dynamic system where player decisions and actions shape the story and the world around them.
Crimson Desert is set to release on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S, with a launch expected in the second quarter of 2025.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
The long-awaited sequel to Hideo Kojima’s 2019 masterpiece, Death Stranding, continues the journey of Sam Porter as he once again sets out to save and reconnect humanity.
While gameplay and story details remain scarce, the sequel is expected to build on the original’s delivery mechanics, exploration, and narrative. From the trailer, it’s clear that Kojima Productions has pushed the game’s graphical fidelity to new heights.
The game features an all-star cast, including Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Troy Baker, Elle Fanning, and Shioli Kutsuna.
Though the exact release date is yet to be announced, Death Stranding 2 will launch as a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
Doom: The Dark Ages
iD Software’s Doom: The Dark Ages is the eighth main entry in the franchise, acting as a prequel to Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal.
Set in a techno-medieval world, the DOOM Slayer is back in another chaotic, fast-paced, combat focused game once again. Players will wield a mix of medieval and advanced technical weapons to wreak havoc on demons, all while discovering how the Slayer became the legend we know today.
Doom: The Dark Ages is set to release in 2025 and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC.
Dune: Awakening
First announced in 2022, Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMO developed by Funcom.
Based on Frank Herbert's iconic Dune universe, players will traverse a war-torn Arrakis, where the Atreides and Harkonnen families battle for control of the planet and luctrative spice trade, while the Fremen have simply gone missing.
Players will need to keep an eye on resources, and make alliances to survive the brutality of Arrakis, all while dynamic, unpredictable events keep them on their toes.
The video game has already achieved over 1 million wishlists on Steam, and is one of the most anticipated releases of 2025. While Funcom has yet to announce a solid release date, Dune: Awakening will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
Ghost of Yotei
Serving as a standalone sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima (2020) from Suckerpunch Productions, Ghost of Yotei follows a new protagonist, Atsu, 300 years after the events of the original game. Set on the Japanese island of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), players will explore a new story.
While new gameplay features are unknown, the game is expected to build on the original’s open-world and combat mechanics, with rumored additions like dual katanas and firearms.
Ghost of Yotei won Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards in November 2024, and we cannot wait to discover the story of the next Ghost!
Though the exact release date is still unknown, the game is confirmed to be built exclusively for PlayStation 5. It remains unclear whether future ports to other platforms will be made.
Little Nightmares III
Little Nightmares III, developed by Supermassive Games, returns for the third instalment in the critically acclaimed Little Nightmares series.
As a standalone sequel, players will follow the story of two friends, Low and Alone, as they search for a way out of Nowhere. Filled with unsettling horror, challenging puzzles and atmospheric storytelling we cannot wait to play this game!
For the first time in the series, players can choose between solo mode with an AI companion or co-op mode for a more interactive experience.
Initially planned for a 2024 release, the game has been delayed until 2025 and will be available on a wide range of platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.
Grand Theft Auto VI
Eleven years after GTA V, Rockstar Games is set to release Grand Theft Auto VI, the highly anticipated sixth entry into the Grand Theft Auto series.
The trailer was leaked online on December 4, 2023 - just a day before its scheduled release. Despite this, the buzz and speculation surrounding the game have been massive.
Set in the fictional state of Leonida, the trailer introduces the two protagonists, Lucia and Jason, as they attempt to pull off a robbery together. Beyond that, the story remains a mystery for now.
Gameplay details are still sparse, but it's expected to build upon the open-world exploration, storytelling, and diverse character interactions that have become staples of the series.
With a rumored development cost of $1–$2 billion, Grand Theft Auto VI is potentially one of the most expensive video games to date. Analysts predict that the game will generate $3 billion within its first year of release, with $1 billion of that coming from pre-orders alone.
The suspected release window is Fall 2025, though many competing publishers are waiting for the official announcement to avoid releasing their games at the same time. Grand Theft Auto VI will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Outer Worlds 2
The Outer Worlds 2 is the highly anticipated next entry in the celebrated Outer Worlds series, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, and was first announced in 2021 at E3.
This first-person sci-fi RPG is set in the Arcadia star system, where players will investigate mysterious rifts threatening the colony while navigating rising tensions among the factions.
In terms of gameplay, expect enhancements over the first game, including expanded weaponry, unique environments, and improved graphical fidelity.
The Outer Worlds 2 is slated for release in 2025 and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
