The See Apple TV+ series, is set in a dystopian future where humanity has lost the sense of sight, which presents challenges to everyday life. In season 3 of See, Baba Voss discovers that a Trivantian scientist has developed a new sighted form of weaponry that threatens himself and his tribe.

We worked closely with our friends at Goodbye Kansas Studios to concept some of the more gruesome explosions that happened on screen, and further shots.

Explosions

Our team researched and referenced real-life footage of explosions. This ensured that our concepts were grounded in reality, providing a believable visual for the team. This realism was crucial in maintaining See's gritty and authentic look.

The process began with extensive research and the collection of high-quality footage from various sources, including controlled demolition sites, military training exercises, and pyrotechnic displays. By analysing these real-world explosions, we were able to understand the intricate details of how the environment reacts to the explosion, the resulting debris patterns, and how light and shadow effects smoke at different stages.

Using this footage, our artists created concept art that depicted explosions with accuracy. Our concept art showed the initial blast and the expanding fireball, the dispersal of debris, and the lingering smoke clouds.

Further Shots

The majority of the footage we received consisted of raw film, presenting us with the unique challenge of transforming these shots with the help of our skilled concept artists. We helped to quickly explore environments, crowd extensions, and grading to help guide the team.

Result

Our approach at using of real-life footage of explosions significantly enriched the VFX concept art for "See" Season 3. This ensured a high degree of realism and provided the larger VFX team with detailed and accurate references, contributing to the devastating visual effects.
